• il modale must (dovere) ha solo la forma del simple present. Si usa per esprimere:

1) comando, proibizione, consiglio:

- You must work hard.

- Devi lavorare sodo.

- You mustn't go out tonight.

- Non puoi uscire stasera.

- You must be more polite.

- Devi essere più gentile.

2) necessità ed obbligo sentiti dalla persona che parla:

- I must go to bed early.

- Devo andare a letto presto.

3) supposizione, conclusione logica:

- It must be late.

- Dev'essere tardi.

• Shall è usato solo allla forma interrogativa della prima persona singolare e plurale del simple present.

- Shall I go?

- Devo andare?

- Shall we go?

- Dobbiamo andare?

Si usa per:

1) fare proposte o dare suggerimenti:

- Shall we go to cinema or to the theatre?

- Dobbiamo andare al cinema o al teatro?

2) offrirsi di fare qualcosa:

- Shall I open the door?

- Devo aprire la porta?

3) chiedere un parere o un consiglio in modo formale:

- What shall I do?

- Cosa devo fare?
