I numeri cardinali - cardinal numbers

Lo zero in inglese si può rendere con :

• nought nelle numerazioni, nei calcoli, ecc...  (0,1,2,..)
• 0 si pronuncia [ou] sia nelle numerazioni che nei numeri di telefono
• si dice zero nelle scale di misurazione (0° zero degrees)

 Quando i numeri da 21 a 99 sono scritti in lettere, il numero delle decine si unisce a quello delle unità con un trattino ( 21 twenty-one, 33 thirty-three, 46 forty-six, 58 fifty-eight)

Per separare le cifre delle migliaia da quelle delle centinaia, i milioni dalle migliaia ecc, si usa la virgola e non il punto. (1,000 - 22,430,900)

Per separare le cifre decimali dalle unità si usa il punto detto point (0.5 nought/0 [ou] point five.

Per scrivere in lettere e per leggere i numeri successivi a 100, si unisce il numero delle centinaia a quello delle decine o delle unità tramite la congiunzione and (237 two hundred and thirty-seven)

Per scrivere in lettere e per leggere i numeri successivi a 1000, al numero delle migliaia si fa seguire direttamente quello delle centinaia senza la congiunzione and, che viene usata davanti alle decine e/o unità:

2,918 two thousand nine hundred and eighteen
3,020 three thousand and twenty

Quando la seconda coppia di numeri è formata da due zeri, nella lettera si pronuncia hundred dopo la prima coppia; se invece essa è una cifra inferiore a dieci, nella lettura viene preceduta da hundred and: 

1400 fourteen hundred
1701 seventeen hundred and one
