  • il modale must (dovere) ha solo la forma del simple present. Si usa per esprimere:
1) comando, proibizione, consiglio:

- You must work hard.
- Devi lavorare sodo.

- You mustn't go out tonight.
- Non puoi uscire stasera.

- You must be more polite.
- Devi essere più gentile.

2) necessità ed obbligo sentiti dalla persona che parla:

- I must go to bed early.
- Devo andare a letto presto.

3) supposizione, conclusione logica:

- It must be late.
- Dev'essere tardi.

  • Shall è usato solo allla forma interrogativa della prima persona singolare e plurale del simple present.
- Shall I go?
- Devo andare?
- Shall we go?
- Dobbiamo andare?

Si usa per:

1) fare proposte o dare suggerimenti:

- Shall we go to cinema or to the theatre?
- Dobbiamo andare al cinema o al teatro?

2) offrirsi di fare qualcosa:

- Shall I open the door?
- Devo aprire la porta?

3) chiedere un parere o un consiglio in modo formale:

- What shall I do?
- Cosa devo fare?

Can / May - Modali - Quando si usano

Can si usa:
May si usa:
a) per esprimere possibilità, capacità, abilità:
- I can’t come . Non posso venire
- Can you swim? Sai nuotare?
- Can you drive? Sai guidare?
a) per indicare una probabilità, un’eventualità:
- He may not end his work at 5 o’clock.
- potrebbe non finire il suo lavoro alle 5.
b) nelle richieste informali:
- Can I go to the bathroom, please?
- Posso andare in bagno, per favore?
b) nelle richieste formali:
- May I use the phone, sir?
- Potrei usare il bagno, signore?
c) per dare e/o rifiutare un permesso:
- You can’t go out tonight.
- Non puoi uscire stasera.
c) per dare e/o rifiutare un permesso in modo formale:
- You may come whenever you want.
- Puoi venire quando vuoi

Modal Verbs - Regole base

I verbi modali sono anche detti difettivi perchè in inglese mancano di alcuni modi e tempi e presentano caratteristiche particolari:

  • non prendono la -s alla terza persona singolare del simple present.
  • rifiutano l'ausiliare nelle forme interrogativa, negativa e interrogativa-negativa.
  • sono seguiti dall'infinito senza to (ad eccezione di ought)
  • non possono essere seguiti da un complemento oggetto.
  • I modali sono sostituti da altri verbi nei modi e nei tempi mancanti.

Potere:  Can, may, could, might
Dovere: shall, must, should, ought (to)
Volere: Will, would
